Gourd (Lagenaria vulgaris)

A common vegetable of the subcontinent is gourd. It is yellowish-green. Its shell is white and the sponge-like shell contains white seeds.

Gourd is especially useful in curing diseases. Gourd is good for increasing fertility. Gourds are eaten boiled or cooked.

Origin and spread

Cultivation of gourd has been going on for a long time. It is believed to have originated in Africa. Currently it is widely cultivated in tropical regions especially India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, China, tropical Africa and South America. Gourd is a warm season vegetable and grows best in warm and humid climates.

Gourd is cooling

Cooked gourd is cooling, diuretic, analgesic and choleretic. Feels relaxed after eating it. However, gourd should not be eaten raw, as it can be harmful to the stomach and alimentary canal.

Gourd is quite beneficial for urinary disorders. Gourd should be consumed daily to treat burning sensation of urinary tract due to high level of acidity of urine. It acts like an alkaline mixture. As an alkaline diuretic in the treatment of urinary tract infections works.

To relieve fatigue

Gourd is valuable in diarrhoea, diabetes and eating too much fatty or fried food. Heat also stops excess sodium loss, quenches thirst and helps relieve fatigue.

Cooked leaves of gourd act as an effective remedy for insomnia. Cooked leaves of gourd are beneficial in insomnia.
