Bitter gourd (Momordica charantia)
Bitter gourd is a common vegetable, widely cultivated in many countries. Coriander 10-20 cm long, both stems narrow and covered with tubercles. The seeds of the unripe fruit are white, but the seeds of the ripe fruit are red. There are two main types of gourds. Many varieties are tall, oblong and light green in color. Another type is small, oval and dark green in color. Both types are bitter in taste. It is red-orange in color when ripe.
Origin and spread
The exact center of origin of bitter gourd is not known. But it is widely cultivated in tropical regions.
Food Value: Minerals and vitamins, water, calcium, protein, phosphorus, fat, iron, vitamin C, fiber, carbohydrates, small amounts of vitamin B complex.
Natural benefits and healing rituals
Corolla has very good medicinal properties. It is antipyretic, tonic, appetizing, stomachic, extra choleretic and antidiabetic.
In the treatment of diabetes
Bitter gourd is especially used in the treatment of diabetes. It contains a type of hypoglycemic or insulin-like substance, called vegetable insulin, which is very effective in reducing blood and urine sugar levels. The diet of diabetic patients should therefore have sufficient quantity of bitter gourd.
Against infection
Bitter gourd increases the body resistance against infection. Many suffer from malnutrition. Bitter gourd is rich in essential vitamins and minerals, especially vitamins A, B1, B2, C and iron. Its regular use is beneficial in many complications, such as hypertension, eye problems, neuritis and defective metabolism of carbohydrates.
Hemorrhoids
Fresh juice of bitter gourd leaves is very good for hemorrhoids. In this condition, three teaspoons of bitter gourd leaf juice should be mixed with a glass of ghol every morning for about a month. Applying bitter gourd root paste on piles is also beneficial.
Blood disorder
Bitter gourd is very beneficial in treating boils, scabies, psoriasis, itching and other fungal diseases.
Diseases of the respiratory system
The root of bitter gourd plant has been used since ancient times for respiratory diseases. For asthma, bronchitis, pharyngitis, rhinitis and cold, one teaspoon of bitter gourd paste should be taken with equal amount of honey or tulsi leaf juice.
Alcoholism
Bitter gourd leaf juice is useful in treating alcoholism. It is an antidote to alcohol poisoning. It helps against liver damage due to excessive alcohol consumption.
Cholera
Bitter gourd is an effective medicine in early stages of cholera and diarrhoea. Mix two teaspoons of bitter gourd juice, equal amount of white onion juice and one teaspoon of fresh lemon juice and eat it in this condition.
Use
Soaking peeled bitter gourd in salt water before cooking reduces bitterness. It is used as an ingredient in curries. The seeds of the ripe fruit are used in pickles.
