Gulsha tengra is a freshwater fish of the genus Mystus in the family Bagridae. Local name Guilla Tengra, Lite Tengra. Gulsha tengra fish, also known as Mystus tengra, is a freshwater catfish species found in South Asia, particularly India, Bangladesh and Nepal. It is a popular food fish and is widely consumed in the region.

Description

Back arched and body pressed. Has long spiny surface and fins. The body color is greenish gray and the underside is lighter. Stripes are visible along the vertical line. Grows up to 43 cm long.


Expansion

This species of fish is found in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Myanmar, Bhutan, Indonesia, Sri Lanka.


Eating habits

This fish is usually carnivorous. But in nature they like to eat aquatic insects, mosquito larvae, small shrimps, rotting organic matter.


Breeding

It becomes fertile at one year of age. May to August is the breeding season, but June-July is the peak breeding season. An adult fish lays an average of about 13,000-39,000 eggs in a season. The eggs are sticky and cream in color.
